Daybreakers Viral Marketing Campaign on Twitter

Daybreaker on TwitterLions Gate has launched a viral marketing campaign for its highly anticipated vampire movie, Daybreakers, with a new Twitter account. Using the name, willthedaybreak, the account has been posting updates since November 26th, starting with the message, “Someone tried to bite me! WTF! I’ve barricaded myself in. Does anyone know what’s going on?”

You can check it out at twitter.com/willthedaybreak for yourself.

Recently, “Daybreaker” posted pictures including a street photo with handwritten remarks about the yellow eyes on the faces of vampire pedestrians. If you’re as excited as we are to see the Spierig Brothers’ dark, futuristic vampire flick, it might be worth keeping an eye on their tweets for new material.

These in-character tweets are nothing new to the world of fiction in popular media. Orson Welles was propelled to fame when the radio adaptation of his novel, War of the Worlds, was presented commercial-free in 1938 with convincing simulated news bulletins that suggested Martians were actually invading. The controversial broadcast led many to panic. In 2000, Fox sent letters to politicians about mutant rights issues to promote the release of Bryan Singer’s X-Men film adaptation. While it’s far less likely that any film’s tweets or letters to congress would actually convince audiences today the way the War of the Worlds radio broadcasts did, the strategy has its obvious similarities and isn’t as new as it may seem.

Still, Daybreakers is probably one of the most original, and definitely one of the most anticipated, new movies for vampire fans everywhere — and we’re all for more publicity and promotions for the film.

Check out our previous posts for more information on the movie itself.

The film, starring Ethan Hawke, Sam Neill, and Willem Dafoe, opens in theaters on January 8th, 2010.
